Manchester City, founded in 1880, was originally based in the West Gorton area of Manchester and known as St. Mark’s Football Club. Finding it difficult to find a permanent location to bring the fans and call their own, the club moved to the newly constructed Hyde Road Stadium in the Ardwick area of Manchester. This change of location meant the club felt the need to rename themselves after their new home, Ardwick Association Football Club. For the next five years, Ardwick AFC battled to prove themselves and were finally admitted into the Football League with the introduction of the Second Division in 1892.
